Description

Rent and account book of John Webb and Thomas Webb Edge: chiefly receipts of rents from Warwickshire properties - Norton Lindsey, Warwick, Wolston, Henley in Arden, Butlers Marston, Sherborne, etc. - which are often difficult to identify although there may be a clue if the tenant lived on the rented property in entries such as Isaac Alsop, West Street, Warwick, Mr. John Coats of Butlers Marston, Wm. Drapier of Kenilworth etc. The rent accounts are to individual tenants and there is an alphabetical and page index at the front of the volume. The rents are often reduced by the tenants' payment of land tax and chief rents and by various allowances against the rent including bills paid by the tenant for repairs: - glazier's bill; blacksmith's iron for the pump, etc.; highways' & overseers' of the poor levies are paid and set against the rents; work done by the tenant which may reflect an aspect of his trade or occupation such as making whips, winding wool etc.; work especially during harvest time - 23 days at harvest work £1. 3s.; provision of seed such as wheat, clover and turnip - 20 bags of seed wheat, 11 lbs of turnip seed at 6d. per lb which goes towards next ½ year's rent, 5s. 6d.; in April 1767 Mr. Smith had 5 sheep that came from Strelley at 17s. each totalling £4. 5s., expenses bringing them cost 2s. 0¾d; tithes; on Mr. John Tipin's account there are references to a proportionable share of £200, £400 and £600 towards taking down and rebuilding Shire Hall at Warwick (1757-1764); Tipin's account also has some building accounts which show that work was taking place on Webb's house at Henley in Arden and that the bills were paid by John Tipin and set against his rent for in October 1765, he settled £28 for 2 year's rent due at Michaelmas 1763 by paying bills to a mason, carpenter, etc., paying land tax and £22. 9s. 7d. in money - the building bills included 8s. 3d. to Henry Lee, mason, Bassel Simmons bill for lime, bricks and carriage 7s. 8d., £1. 13s. 4d. to Mr. London, carpenter; in February 1768 he similarly settled his 3 year's rent of £42 which had been due at Michaelmas 1766. There are a number of loose receipts and vouchers which had been pinned to the page (with subsequent rusting and tears) and these have been left in the volume secured by brass clips as they complement the accounts - one refers to a heriot of £5. 5s. paid on the death of John Webb and which appears to be allowed as part of the rent of Wm. Knowles or John Ball (3 April 1784) There are also memos. re. loans, notes, mortgages etc. - received of Mr. Wise of Leamington (Lementon) £60 for ½ year's interest of £3,000 on mortgage of his estate at Cubbington near Warwick; he was still paying £82. 12s. 6d. for ½ year's interest of £3,400 on 30 Sept. 1783. Levy on inhabitants of Strelley at 7d. in the £1 for raising £8. 7s. 11 d. for paying £5 in lieu of militia not raised for year 1770 is headed by John Webb (£4. 16s. 4d.) and the rector, Mr. Goodday (10s. 6d.). A similar levy of 3d. in the £1 for building a Shire Hall for the county of Nottingham (Edward Steveson, collector 21 Feb. 1771) has John Webb (£1. 1s. 10d.) and Mr. Goodday (5s.). Table of calculations re. square yards to acre, rood, perch, etc. Detailed. Vol.
