Part of RD/TH/16/1 was deposited by Arun District Council in July 1976.

A Rural Sanitary Authority was probably formed for Thakeham Union in 1872, under the Public Health Act of that year, although the first surviving minute book dates from 1889. In 1895 the R.S.A. became a Rural District Council, under the terms of the Local Government Act of 1894.

The R.D.C. was abolished in March 1933 under the West Sussex Review Order, and merged with the greater part of Steyning West R.D.C. to form a new council, Chanctonbury R.D.C. Findon parish, however, was transferred to the new Worthing R.D.C., except for a small portion which was added to Worthing Borough.

The R.S.A. was originally formed c.1872, consisted of Amberley, Ashington, West Chiltington, Coldwaltham, Findon, Greatham, Hardham, Parham, Pulborough, Rackham, North Stoke, Storrington, Sullington, Thakeham, Warminghurst, Washington, Wiggenholt and Wiston. The only major boundary change between that date and 1933 was in 1878, when Broadbridge and Broadbridge Heath were transferred from Sullington parish to Horsham parish and R.D.C.
