Title: CHARD BOROUGH RECORDS
Date: 1235 - 1988
Description: The original main deposit of borough archives also included parish archives which have been reunited with the parish registers under reference D/P/Chard. During the listing of the remaining material a series of draft minute books 1835-1912 together with various duplicates of printed material have been handed over to Chard Museum for the use of the Chard history group. This society has also deposited some borough papers at the Somerset Record Office (see DD/CHG catalogue for details). The archive is particularly rich in the working papers of the council from 1835-1935 as well as including Portreeve's accounts from 1601. Particularly well documented are schemes for water supply and drainage and the financial arrangements of the Gas Co. The borough police force is also represented by an occurrence book.
