The manor of Hardingshute, which lies immediately north of Nunwell is not mentioned in Domesday, but by the end of the 13th Century had come into the possession of the Lisle or de Insula family, whose main seat was then at Wootton on the Isle of Wight, and who were the largest tenants-in-chief on the Island, under the Lords of the Island at Carisbrooke Castle. The Oglanders acquired the manor in 1557 from the heirs of the Lisle family.
