Description

Papers of the Revd. St.J.B. Groser concerning social work in Stepney and other parts of the East End of London:

Housing in Stepney

Slum housing with particular reference to the rural deanery of Stepney, being the report of the housing committee of the Stepney ruri-decanal conference, 1929 (ff.1-10).

Papers of the Stepney Tenants Defence League, of which Groser was President, including surveys of dilapidated property in Bethnal Green and an agreement made by the League with the landlord of premises in Splidts Street, 1938-40 (ff.11-71).

Correspondence of the Stepney Reconstruction Group, with evidence submitted to the Ministry of Health Central Housing Advisory Committee Subcommittee on Design of Dwellings, and papers concerning the County of London Plan of the London County Council for post-war reconstruction, 1941-4 (ff.72-110).

Statutory duties of the Central Housing Advisory Committee appointed by the Housing Act, 1935, with lists of members, which include Groser, and progress reports, 1943-58 (ff.111-21).

Unemployment

Report of a sub-committee of the ruri-decanal conference of Stepney on unemployment, [1930-1] (ff.122-5).

Notice by Groser of a conference organised by Christ Church parochial church council on poverty in the East End of London and the administration of the poor law, 1932. Also a letter by Groser to an unidentified newspaper on unemployment, 6 February 1933, and a lecture or address by him on unemployment, no date There are also papers on scales of outdoor relief, 1933-44 (ff.126-59).

East End Trust and Assistance to the Aged

Papers concerning the East End Trust, of which Groser was a trustee, and other provision for the aged, including the Stepney Old People's Welfare Association and proposals for establishing Tower Hamlets Old People's Welfare Association, 1943-65 (ff.160-203).
