Description

A courtier. Mughal, c.1680. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with pink outer margin. 187 by 109 mm; page 378 by 252 mm. Reverse: a quatrain in 'nasta'liq' calligraphy by Almas; dated AH1128/AD1716. Acourtier,facing left, stands on grassland with his hands folded and a gold cane crooked in his left arm. His jama is decorated with flowers on a pink background. The background is green with orange clouds at the top.
