Richmond petty sessional division was formed in 1840 and comprised the parishes of Barnes and Mortlake (formerly in West Brixton division) together with those of Kew, Petersham and Richmond (formerly in Kingston and Elmbridge division). A separate borough commission for Richmond was issued in February 1893, affecting the parishes of Kew, Petersham and Richmond, and part of Mortlake parish (North Sheen). After representations from the borough justices (see 2219/2/18, 29 Nov 1893) the county petty sessional court was transferred to Mortlake on 25 Mar 1895. To avoid confusion the division was renamed Mortlake from 1903.
By an Order in Council made under the Metropolitan Police Courts Act 1840 the parish of Barnes was from some date prior to 1882 included in the South Western (formerly Wandsworth) police court division. Police court business for Barnes was transferred back to the petty sessional court from 31 Dec 1893 and is therefore only found in the registers from that date.
