Administrative / biographical background

The Maguire Street Chapel was erected c.1795, by Mr. Mayers, a Swedenborgian, and intended for use by the Swedenborgians on their abandonment of the Key St. Chapel.

Mayers became bankrupt before the completion of the building and it could not be used for the purpose originally intended, but was occupied by the Wesleyan New Connexion in about 1797 until about 1800.

Between 1800 and 1819, the Chapel was used by various Independent, Methodist, Baptist and Unitarian sects.

The Swedenborgians came into possession of the Chapel in 1819 and the pencil note on item 1 (below) is based, presumably, on that fact.

However, in 1823, the Primitive Methodists came into possession of Maguire Street Chapel and item 1 dates from this period of its history.
