Administrative / biographical background

Introductory Note

The site for a [united] National School at Wookey was conveyed to the vicar, churchwardens, and overseers of Wookey in 1842 (D\P\wook 18/1/1), the school being enlarged in 1894. It became a board school on the creation of Wookey School Board in 1875, and a council school following the Education Act, 1902. It is now known as Wookey County Primary School.

The records listed here include not only those of Wookey School, but School Board records referring also to Henton Board (Infants) School. Henton School was built in 1879 and closed in 1960, when its remaining pupils were sent to Wookey. Correspondence relating to the building of Henton School is also included.
