Administrative / biographical background

Introduction

Kent attended school in Port Talbot, and worked for a time at Price, Jenkins & Co, ship brokers, coal exporters and merchants, Port Talbot. He was appointed Additional Sanitary Inspector to the Chailey Rural District Council in July 1929, and became the youngest sanitary inspector in Great Britain in January 1930, when he was promoted following the death of Harry Weller. He was Chief Public Health Inspector at Chailey RDC for forty-one years. As Chief Billeting Officer during the Second World War, he was responsible for housing 3,000 evacuees in three days

Kent served as president of the Sussex County Rugby Football Club, and was a committee member of the Sussex County Cricket Club. He was captain of Lewes Priory Cricket Club and Lewes Rugby Football Club. He was chairman of the Lewes Building Society, then chairman of the Sussex County Building Society after its merger. He became Conservative district councillor for Kingston in 1973, and served as chairman of Lewes District Council

George Kent was married to Megan Edwards, the daughter of Mr and Mrs T Edwards of Heathfield, Sussex. She died in 1971. Kent died in 1980, and was survived by two daughters, Joanna Spence and Penny Farncombe
