Description (What the record is about)
-
The presence of the Game Law examinations and the return of highways prove the papers to be Petty Sessional, not parish records. Most of the settlement papers are originals, but they seem to relate to disputed settlement cases and may have been used in evidence. The examinations include a draft letter and reply to the Rev. Dr. Penny, minister of Badminton, 1784, with a note that the letters were 'to be franked by the Duke.' The Duke of Beaufort frequently signs as a J.P.
They are clearly the records of the Cross Hands division. The return of highways of 1752 implies that they met as far afield as Iron Acton (apparently not in this division), but examinations were taken before the Justices at the Cross Hands in the parish of Old Sodbury in 1769 and 1784.
The records presumably relate to the activities of the Duke of Beaufort as a Justice.
