Davis was born and brought up in Pembrokeshire. He served in India during World War I, and graduated in forestry from Oxford in 1921. He worked as an Assistant Conservator of Forests for the Forestry Department of British Guiana before returning to India for Second World War service on the Northwest Frontier. Davis retiired from the Indian Forestry Service about 1948, and spent his long retirement in Wales, where he became an authority on the natural history of the Principality.
