File 9 Trade and Commerce

The forty-six volumes and files forming the 'Trade and Commerce' subject files were produced by the Confidential Office at the Political Agency in Bahrain. Most of the files and volumes date from 1928-1950. The 'Trade and Commerce' subject files mainly contain correspondence between the Political Resident at Bushire, the Political Agent at Bahrain, other British authorities, the Advisor to the Government at Bahrain, the Eastern Bank Limited and local rulers. The topics covered include:. imports and exports of rice, tea, silk, cotton, oils and minerals and other goods; banking; exchange rates; freight services; fishing industry; The 'Trade and Commerce' subject files contain maps of the Gulf shores, Kuwait, Iraq and Palestine. A number of documents are in Arabic, mostly with English translation.

The 'Trade and Commerce' subject files are based on a subject file system, with 'Trade and Commerce' being allocated to File 9, followed by an oblique stroke and a file number for every successive file opened on the subject, from 9/1 to 9/49; these can be followed by a part number, for example 9/23 I. There are gaps in the sequence.
