Previously known as the Slope Road or Church Hill Road, it was constructed in 1824 by the Lord of the Manor and variously described as 'Slope to the Leas' and 'Church Slope'. Renamed 'Road of Remembrance' in 1923 in memory of the many thousands of Allied troops who passed down it to the Harbour and thence across to France and Belgium during the 1st World War.
