Administrative / biographical background

The right to hold a fair between 5 and 13 October annually on Sloe Fair Field in Chichester was first granted to the bishop by Henry I, c. 1107-8. During that period the jurisdiction of the mayor and corporation of Chichester was completely in abeyance and during the 18th century this led to frequent disputes between the bishop and corporation. In 1807 the bishop surrendered his rights to the corporation.
