Includes sale particulars for the property and a leasehold house in St Mary's Lane for sale at auction by Messrs Verrall and Son at the Crown Inn, 8 May 1830, for the property to be sold at auction by Messrs Verrall and Son at the Bear Inn, 10 May 1853 and contract copy for the property to be sold at auction by Herbert Morris and Son at the White Hart Hotel, 8 Sep 1903. In 1673 Sir John Pelham of Laughton conveyed a piece of Townsends Field to William Spence of South Malling who died in 1677 leaving it to his brother John. He died in 1691 leaving it to his wife Ruth and grandson John. On his death in 1741 it passed to his son Luke, who then sold to Samuel Durrant of Lewes in 1782. He died in 1783 leaving it to Samuel Durrant of Robertsbridge who died a few months later. His eldest son John left it to his sisters Mary Mercer Durrant and Elizabeth Durrant and his brothers Samuel Durrant and William Durrant in 1787. They then sold in 1789 to Thomas Harben who in 1791 sold to John Wimble, coal merchant and Amon Wilds, carpenter, the property now being described as an acre taken on the west side of the field, abutting the land taken for the House of Correction on the east, the lane leading from St Johns Church to a tanyard on the north and the new road on the west. Wimble and Wilds sold the property to John West, bricklayer, and William Balcombe Langridge, gent in 1792 and West Nurse, late an innkeeper, in 1869 and he and his mortgagee sold to Jane Elizabeth Lockett of Lavender Hill, Surrey in 1901. It was then put on the market again in 1903 by her son Henry.
