Description

The files in this sub-collection contain material related to Stamp's work as a journalist, writing for numerous periodicals (eg. newspapers, jourmals, magazines etc.). It includes drafts, proofs, and cuttings of published articles, book reviews, published letters, exhibition reviews, obituaries, and academic essays on many different subjects.

The majority of this material was not organised in folders, but as loose material and has been arranged during the cataloguing process by periodical. During the cataloguing process, where there were copies of both the draft and the cutting, only the draft was kept, duplicates were also not kept, with the exception of The Spectator material. In this case only draft articles were kept and not cuttings because they have been comprehensively digitised, and made available online, by The Spectator.

It is clear that this sub-collection is not a fully comprehensive record of all Stamp's journalistic output, and in many cases Stamp often filed his drafts and articles into his research files, [GMS/1/1-GMS/1/6]. Therefore in many instances it is best to view Stamp's journalism files alongside his research files.

Stamp had a regular column for the periodicals noted below and as a result the material within these series is more extensive and has been arranged by decade or year:

-Private Eye

-The Spectator

-The Daily Telegraph

-The Independent

For the rest of the sub-collection, files devoted to individual periodicals contain, as a minimum, 6 items. Miscellaneous files include periodicals, for which there are five items or less.

The material in this sub-collection includes:

-newspaper and journal cuttings

-drafts

-correspondence

- images

-research notes

-reports
