The North East Coal Tar Distillers' meetings were being held prior to May 1928.In February 1929 it was decided that a new association be formed to be called the North East Coast Tar Distillers (1929). A Committee comprising of the firms of Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Dent, Sons & Co. Ltd., Dorman Long & Co. Ltd., Newcastle & Gateshead Gas Co., Pease & Partners Ltd., South Bank Chemical Co. Ltd., Marley Hill Chemical G. Ltd. and Strakers & Love Ltd. was established. In May 1931, the minutes are described as those of the North East Coast Tar Distillers Association, with the addition to the above of representatives from Cleveland Tar Distillers Ltd., Deanbank Chemical Co. Ltd., Grasser-Monsanto Chemical Works Ltd., Marley Hill Chemical Co. Ltd., Thomas Ness Ltd., Sadler & Co. Ltd. and the Stockton Corporation.
