In 1662 the Revd George Thorne, the rector of Melcombe Regis Church, was ejected from that benefice. He then led a small non-conformist congregation, who met in various places in the town. In 1672 a licence was obtained to use the house of James Reed. In 1703 three messuages in St Nicholas Street were purchased and in 1705 conveyed to the Congregational Trustees. There is evidence to suggest that part of this site had been used by the Presbyterians as a meeting place since 1672. In 1805 the church was re-built and in 1817 extensive alterations took place. During the 1820s the Church helped to establish a Congregational chapel in Weymouth in Hope Square [see NP9] and later one in Radipole.
In 1864 a new church was built in Gloucester Street. They continued to worship there until 1971 when the church was closed and the congregation joined Hope Congregational Church; Gloucester Street church was demolished soon after.
