Administrative / biographical background

Depositor's paternal grandfather, Isaac Samuels, came to England from Russia with his parents as a young man. They lived for a time in Liverpool, then in Manchester before moving to South Africa. He later returned to Manchester and married c.1905. Isaac Samuels was originally a machinist, but later sold curtains at Blackburn market. In 1921 he opened a drapery shop in Cross Lane. He was prominent in many Jewish institutions, including the Manchester Burial Society of Polish Jews (as Treasurer), the Manchester Jews Benevolent Society, the Jewish Hospital and the Hightown Synagogue. He lived in Bell Street, then Bellot Street, Hightown and died in 1931.
