Administrative / biographical background

Worthing R.D.C. was formed under the West Sussex Review Order of 1933 and came into existence on 1 April of that year. It was composed of the greater part of the former East Preston R.D.C., together with three parishes from the former Steyning West R.D.C., Lancing, Sompting and Coombes, and (from the former Thakeham R.D.C.) the greater part of Findon parish.

For a plan see PM 276.

The parishes of the Rural District were as follows:

Angmering, Burpham, Clapham, Ferring, Findon, Houghton, Kingston, Lancing [consisting of the former Lancing and Coombes parishes], Lyminster, Patching, Poling, East Preston, Rustington [less a portion transferred to Littlehampton U.D.], Sompting [less a portion transferred to Worthing Borough], South Stoke, and Warningcamp.

For full details see Boundary Changes in West Sussex (W.S.R.O. MP 1348).

There do not appear to have been any major boundary revisions between 1933 and 1974. By a W.S.C.C. Order of 1939 the Urban Districts of Shoreham and Southwick, together with the parish of Lancing and part of the parish of Sompting were formed into a new Urban District of Kingston Buci, but the Second World War prevented this Order from coming into effect.
