Description

The Precinct of the Cathedral Close has always formed a separate ecclesiastical parish, but had close connexions with Subdeanery parish.

The Close contributed to Subdeanery parish for the maintenance of its poor (Cap/I/18/3). The Bishop's Palace Chapel, which unlike the rest of the Close, was not under the control of the Dean and Chapter, was used as a chapel of ease for country incumbents living in Chichester (see introduction to Cap/I/18/2).
