504. Plymouth Corn Mill, Cremyll Point (PQ & PR). Nov. 1830-Feb. 1831, May 1831. 17 items.
Two 45 horse power double-acting crank engines, with 34¼ inch cylinders, 6 foot strokes, parallel motions, [cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods].

Cross-section of the engine houses and boiler houses - coloured direct copy marked "See a fresh drawing made 12 Jan. 1831"; reverse plan of the engine houses and boiler house, sections of 1 engine house, cross-section of the engine houses and boiler house, longitudinal section of the boiler, plan of the tunnel (these drawings are marked "The original drawings sent 8 Sep. 1830 were returned, & these corrected ones sent 12 Jan. 1831"); cross-section of engine houses and boiler house, and longitudinal section of boiler, on tracing paper, sent by the Rennies 13 Nov. 1830; drawing of boiler, steam pipe and cylinder, and section showing the engine foundations, regulating line, high water line etc. sent by Boulton Watt & Co. to the Rennies 23 Nov. 1830; sections of the 3 boilers, steam pipes and cylinder etc. sent by the Rennies 17 Dec. 1830; plan of the engine houses and boiler house. The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following internal letters, notes and sketches: note from William Bennett to William Middleton at Soho Foundry dated Soho, 10 Jan. 1831, with Middleton's reply and a sketch of the shaft on the same sheet; sheet of notes and sketches dated 10 Jan. 1831 marked "for Mr. Watt"; small sketches of the bottom of the columns, part of the spring beams; note from Frederick Bennett to William Bennett dated 4 Feb. 1831 with sketch of shafts etc.; note from William Middleton to William Bennett dated Soho Foundry, 4 May 1831, with sketch plans of the air pumps and hot water cisterns; note from Henry Wright to Frederick Bennett at Soho Foundry, with sketch of tube of uptake boiler.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 837. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 112.

For the Victualling Office, H. M. Navy. Corn mill, Cremyll Point, Plymouth. The engines were ordered by George and John Rennie. The contract for these engines was investigated by a House of Commons committee.
