From War Diary: (1st Battle of the Scarpe) 9/4/1917: ……."when the enemy discovered the advance of our troops many of them deserted their front line thus affording these guns an excellent target which they quickly availed themselves, doing good execution. They well able also to cover the advance of the Infantry. Lieut Bennett's section which was attached to the 1st E Yorks, came into action in the German front line, beating off a determined counter attack about 6.30pm. Our casualties were 1 man killed, 1 officer and three men wounded. The enemy again counter-attacked with great violence and re-took the ground taken the previous day. It was impossible to hold up the attack and the four gun teams were all casualties with the exception of 2/Lt Rankin and five ORs. Lieut Bennett was killed fighting most gallantly with his section.";Other Notes: BENNETT, Lieutenant, V R, 3rd Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.) attd 64th Bn.
