I am directed to inform you that as the result
of an enquiry at the Base the following report has Been
received concerning Lieutenant Colonel B H N.8ettle,BS0.
B.C. , 19th Hussars attached Machine Gun fiorps;-
"No.19450 Serjeant W.Fisher. 21st liaehine Gun
Corps, has been interrogated and states as follows
’On 24.3.18. I was standing in a trench near
•Cleary. 1 saw Lt.Coi.B.H.N.Settle and his Adjt.
'Capt.Pope about 80 yards away from me on my left
'watching the front with field glasses. After an
• interval I heard the explosion of a shell and I
•lookritowards the spot where Lt.Col.Settle had been
’standing. 1 just saw both him and Capt.Pope fall
’in a heap obviodsly instantaneously killed. We
’were unable to move towards the spot where these
’Officers fell as the eneap appeared right on us
'and we had already been ordered to withdraw."
This evidence, it will be seen, oonfirms the
decision of the Army Council which was communicated to
you on 23rd October,1918, and 1 am again to express
their sympathy with you in your bereavement. I am to
add that publication will now be made in the official
casualty list.
