Memorial plaque to Henry Julian Dunlop Day, Lieutenant Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), died on active service 3 Dec 1918, aged 21. Born at Forest Hill, London 1897. Both his parents were school masters . The 1901 and 1911 census shows the family living at 82 Middle Market Road, Great Yarmouth. By 1911 his father, Henry George Dunlop Day had become a Head Teacher and his eldest sister is also listed as a school teacher. Henry Julian Dunlop Day joined the 18th Royal Fusiliers (1st Public Schools) with a service number of PS/6587 and landed in France on 14/11/15. The Public Schools Brigade consisted of the 18th,19th, 20th and 21st Royal Fusiliers and all but the 20th were disbanded on 24th April 1916 with many of the men being commissioned as officers. In 1915 the Public Schools Brigade issued a wonderful recruiting poster ( see last photo), an example of which can be seen in the National Army Museum. Henry Julian Dunlop Day was commissioned as a Lt in the MGC on 25/9/16 ( London Gazette 24/10/16). He died on 3rd Dec whilst on active service at the Military Hospital, Belton, Grantham, Lincolnshire and is buried at Great Yarmouth, New Cemetery in the parish of St. Nicholas.;Other Notes: DAY, Lieutenant, HENRY JULIAN DUNLOP Machine Gun Corps (Inf). 3rd December 1918.
