Administrative / biographical background

The Samaritan funds comprised a bequest from Miss Ellen Reardon in 1881, in memory of her father Daniel, mother Elizabeth and sister Margaret, and a gift from George Sturge in 1884. The Reardon bequest was to be "applied for the benefit of patients on leaving the hospital", and the Sturge gift was to be "paid or applied for such inpatients as may be necessitous, and within three months from their discharge from hospital, and for the purpose of their having the necessary nourishment, clothing or change of air". This committee administered these funds.
