Administrative / biographical background

Formed under the county of Chester Review Order 1933. Comprised the parishes of Barnston, Gayton, Heswall-cum-Oldfield, Irby, Pensby and Thurstaston; with part of Arrowe, Birmstage and Thornton Hough. This was the residue of the area covered by the Wirral Rural District Council- established under the Local Government Act 1894 to take over many of the local government services previously provided by the Wirral Board of Guardians; parts of which had passed to Birkenhead Wallasey and Bebington during the 1920s and 1930s. The Wirral Urban District Council had its headquarters in Heswall. It was superseded by the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in April 1974. The Treasurer, Clerk, Engineer and Surveyor mainly deposited records in 1974.
