The school was opened in 1897 as a Board School. Infants occupied the northern building, which was used as a School for the Blind 1932-1940. It became a Junior Mixed and Infants in 1946, and in 1975, Devonshire First School. The Boys and Girls departments were in the southern building, which became a Senior School in 1929, was renamed Southern Secondary Modern in 1951, and became Fernhurst Middle in 1975.
