Description

Survey volume GG2 is the second in the series of seven 'GG' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of York, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume concern the York Cathedral Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as follows: the Deanery Estates on 25 December 1843 (effective date), which were published in the London Gazette on 19 July 1844 by Order in Council; the Vicars Choral Estates on 25 December 1864 (effective date), which were published in the London Gazette on 15 September 1865 by Order in Council; the Chancellorship Estates on 26 July 1860 by vacancy; the Precentorship Estates on 14 June 1853 by Order in Council; the Subdeanery Estates on 16 April 1852 by Order in Council; the York Succentorship Estates on 9 August 1853 by Order in Council; the Ampleforth Prebend Estates on 27 December 1842 by vacancy; the Apesthorpe Prebend Estates on 9 August 1841 by vacancy; the Fenton Prebend Estates on 21 February 1858 by vacancy; the Fridaythorpe Prebend Estates on 9 February 1855 by vacancy; and the Grindall Prebend Estates on 9 January 1841 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Wawn, Anston, Laughton en le Morthen, Acklam, Kilham, Kilnwick Percy, Pickering, Pocklington, Thornton with Allerthorpe, Barnby [Barmby] Moor with Fangloss, Hayton with Bielby, Millington with Givendale, Ellerburne with Wilton, Ebberstone with Allerstone, Driffield, Goole, Haxley, Hestington St. Lawrence, Tanghall, Goodmanham, RFenton, Marsham, Sherburn, Church Fenton, Stockton, Apesthorpe, Bugthorpe, Little Ouseburn, Tadcaster, York St. Olave, Tunsall, Ampleforth, Dunnington, Bilton and Boles; and the county of Devon, parishes of Axminster, Kilmington and Membury.
