Until 1896, the parish of Swineshead was in the administrative County of Huntingdon. It was exchanged for the Bedfordshire parish of Tilbrook under s.54 of the Local Government Act 1888, by the "Counties of Bedford & Huntingdon (Swineshead & Tilbrook) Order 1896." The provisional order of the Local Government Board is dated 18 May 1896 [copy of order in LGP 4], and it had apparently been confirmed and come into effect by November 1896.
For ecclesiastical purposes, Swineshead remained in the Kimbolton Deanery of the Archdeaconry of Huntingdon until 1914, when the Bedfordshire part of the Diocese of Ely was transferred to the Diocese of St. Albans
