Report of visiting justices to gaol and bridewell

Four years elapsed since total change in system made. Justices expressed their "perfect satisfaction". New governor was appointed 12 Feb. 1828.

They made comparison of expenditure on gaol for 4 years from year ending Easter 1828 showing amounts spent on building, totalling £18,078.16s.6d. For four succeeding years it was £15,133.19s.4d.

Spent on building and repairs in first period £1,871.16s.9d. and in second period £15,678.15s.8d.

Small portion of the saving was as a result of the abandonment of Launceston gaol at Easter 1829.

They hoped that the gaol expenses might have been less but noted that many repairs had been necessary to both gaol and bridewell "built not much more than fifty years ago". With regard to security, and also to accommodation, conditions "are now far from being in a perfect state".

Regarding health of prisoners the introduction of the system of "Dietary and Classification" cases of fever have been reduced. Increased accommodation in the infirmary had been provided, but had not been occupied. Praise was due to the governor who had superintended the improvements. Report dated Apr. 2 1832.
