His loss is a very serious one for the Bn and one not to be easily replaced. I had the very highest opinion of him both as an officer and a man and would have trusted him anywhere with any job, knowing that if he were in charge, everything would be just as it should be. At the time of his death he was with his guns in a very forward and exposed portion of the line and it was mainly due to him and his men that the portion of the line was so long maintained against heavy odds at a most critical period of the battle". He was a keen sportsman, obtaining his 1st XI colours in 1904 and was Captain in 1905 and also captain of fives; unmarried.
