Description

The collection consists of pedigrees, grants of arms, visitations, heralds' notebooks and associated material relating mainly to Suffolk but also covering Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk, collected by Miss Joan Corder of Ipswich (1921-2005), together with extensive notes, transcripts and photographs compiled by her in the course of her research.

The collection formed the basis of a series of seminal works by Miss Corder on heraldry in Suffolk. These were:

A Dictionary of Suffolk Arms (Suffolk Records Society, 1965)

Hatchments in Britain, vol 2: Norfolk and Suffolk, ed Peter Summers, (Phillimore, 1976) (Suffolk portion)

The Visitation of Suffolk 1561 made by William Hervy (transcribed and edited) (Harleian Society, 1981, 1984)

A Dictionary of Suffolk Crests: Heraldic Crests of Suffolk Families (Suffolk Records Society, 1998)

The collection was purchased in 2006 throught the generosity of the MLA/V & A Purchase Grant Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, Friends of the National Libraries, Friends of Suffolk Record Office, Suffolk Records Society , Suffolk Family History Society, Manifold Trust, Scarfe Trust, Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History, Suffolk Local History Council, Geoffrey Burton Trust, Suffolk Heraldry Society and donations from 82 private individuals.
