Tosh Kano, who was born in Honolulu in 1914 had dual American-Japanese citizenship. Since he was working in Japan, he was drafted into the Imperial Army in 1940, and joined the 5th Engineer Regiment. The memoir covers his service on the South China front (1940-1) at Bukit Temma Prisoner of War camp (1942) and in Hiroshima (1943-45). It also includes an account of his experiences in Hiroshima in August 1945, when he was amongst the survivors of the Atomic bomb.

Administrative / biographical background

Tosh Kano was born in Honolulu of Japanese parents and educated mainly in Japan. Although he had dual American-Japanese citizenship, he was drafted into the Japanese Army in 1940 and joined the 5th Engineer Regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army. He was a short distance from the centre of the city when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
