Bethel was formed in 1804 following disagreements at New Road Independent Church, when part of the congregation broke away and initially met in a schoolroom which was shared with local Baptists. The first pastor, Rev. J. Harrison, was appointed in 1806, and a new chapel and schoolroom were opened the following year in Henry Street. The chapel was extensively renovated and new schools built between 1882 and 1884. In January 1965 the church amalgamated with Castlecroft and New Road churches to form a united Bury Congregational Church, based in the former New Road premises. Records of the amalgamated church are listed with those of New Road (CNR).
