Description

Bound volume entitled "Lord Feildings Dispatches A.D. 1634-1638" in which is inscribed in a late 18th century hand [not Hamper's] "Letters and Memorials transmitted to his Majesty's Secretary of State by the Lord Basil Feilding Baron of Newnham Padox son and heir to William the first Earl of Denbigh during his executing the caracter of Ambassadour Extraordinary to the French King and divers other Princes and States. Including the occurrences of four years viz ab anno 1634 ad annum 1638."

The despatches are written in a contemporary hand and bound in date order; the overwhelming majority are weekly newsletters dated from Venice, 1634/5-1637, but there are also a few from Paris (1634), Chambery (1634) Turin (1634,1638) Ponte di Stura (1634/5) Valenza (1634/5) and Verona (1637/8). The information given is not confined to details of events in the place from which the letter was written: the whole spectrum of European politics is surveyed.
