For the attribution to Clutterbuck himself of many of the pencil, pencil and wash and pen drawings there is some evidence in the shape of initialled drawings, titling and dating in his own hand, as well as those identifiable drawings from which prints were made. If these attributions are correct, his progression from careful architectural drawing and inhibited sketching to a free and almost romantic style could show that he had studied seriously under someone like John Bourn and greatly profited from his studies. This is not to devalue his "architectural" style: the pencil and blue wash drawing of Ashridge under construction (184) is a particularly good example.
Unusually interesting are some of the original illustrations which are represented by pulls from various stages of the plates. Perhaps the best example is that of the South Porch of St. Mary's Church, Hitchin (399-402), of which there is an initial pencil sketch, Edward Blore's sepia drawing based upon it, a pull from an unfinished plate and one from the plate when complete except for the engraving of the caption.
