Description (What the record is about)
-
This archive is composed primarily of the records of Bush and Co. and their predecessors Bush, Morse and Welling, and Powell and Co. of 78 High Street, Lewes, who were all land agents and chartered surveyors carrying out a wide range of professional work based upon their land agency practice. The firm was established by H R Powell in 1874 and was known as Powell and Co. until at least 1951. By 1957 it was named Bush, Morse and Welling, and was briefly Bush and Co. before amalgamating in 1969 with Strutt and Parker, a firm with offices in several towns, the Lewes office dating from between 1934 and 1936, initially at 213 High Street
The collection divides naturally into two main groups: the administrative records of the firm itself (BMW/A and BMW/F) and the records held on behalf of clients (BMW/C). Of particular interest among the former are the valuations and inventories of properties sold. Among the latter are a number of series containing records important for the history of East Sussex, especially the deeds of Thomas Harben, the 18th century Lewes banker (BMW/C/6), the papers of the well-known solicitors, Hoper (BMW/C/7), Ringmer manor documents (BMW/C/18) and Stanmer estate records (BMW/C/21)
As the collection remained in active use until 1969, very little restoration of original order was required. A certain amount of pruning of duplicates was necessary, but otherwise the records are virtually as they were when they were an administrative entity
To the initial deposit in 1970 have been added files from two later deposits, BMW/A/19/1-2 from ACC 6617 and BMW/A/19/3-14 from ACC 6823. Some derive from the practice of Bush and Co., others from Strutt and Parker's
