Administrative / biographical background

In September 1884 Elizabeth Sarah Simpson, daughter of Moses Simpson of 10 Upper Brook Street, wood turner married Samuel Smith Pattinson, railway clerk and son of John Pattinson, publican, who ran the Hare and Hounds in King Street. After their marriage they lived at 8 Upper Brook Street and Mrs Pattinson set up in business as a milliner at no.1 Upper Brook Street. Her husband was agent for owners of property in Ulverston. The records of the business cover the period 1886-1902 although the earliest personal papers date from 1878.
