Custodial history

These records form one part of a collection of papers deposited by Buckell and Drew, Solicitors. For most of the period to which this collection relates, R.F. Eldridge was the Archdeacon's registrar, based in St. James Street, Newport. However by 1939 one of the partners in the firm of Buckell and Drew, Newport solicitors, based in Castlehold Lane had become the registrar, which accounts for the presence of the papers within the archives of that particular firm.

Administrative / biographical background

The archdeaconry was founded in 1871. Previously there had been only two Archdeaconries in the Diocese of Winchester: Winchester (which had included the Isle of Wight) and Surrey. The majority of the records date from when the Archdeaconry was in the Diocese of Winchester. The Isle of Wight later became part of the new Diocese of Portsmouth in 1927.
