INTRODUCTION

The records which make up this collection were passed to this office by Lieutenant Colonel J D Sainsbury on behalf of various organisations and individuals (see 'Note on provenance'). They relate mainly to volunteer, territorial, auxiliary and reserve military units raised in Hertfordshire between 1663 and 1994. The Histories of these forces are succinctly described in Lieutenant Colonel Sainsbury's Hertfordshire Soldiers (Hertfordshire Local History Council, 1969) which has been extensively consulted in preparing this catalogue and a copy of which is available in the Record Office's library, together with a number of other publications relating to this county's military history, compiled by Lieutenant Colonel Sainsbury and others.
