Admitted RHH 20/3/1918 dental abscess - on leave from Clipstone and had dental abscess. As leave expired, ordered to RHH. Had teeth fixed up. Nov 1916 had scarlet fever in France - 3 months in hospital. Medical Board - sent back to duty in Feb. After 1 month sent to hospital with debility and transf to England. Medical Board: given one month light duty. Next Board at Grantham in Aug 1917 passed fit. Remained at Depot. Admitted hospital in Dec with tonsillitis - 3 weeks. Returned Clipstone and given 7 days leave. Whilst on leave, dental abscess - now complains of weakness of legs - debility - suitable period of rest is required in a Convalescent Hospital - recomm 1 month.Medical Board, Chisledon Special Division Military Hospital:
disability: syphilis, date 7/4/1918, London
states that he reported sick for syphilis 6/5/1918 and that he has had no treatment for same until admitted here 11/6/1918. Stated that he reported sick with sore on penis and that rash appeared 2 weeks later. On 11/6/1918 indurated sore on prepuce. Rosiolar rash, scar of ulceration left tonsil, mucus patch left side of soft palate.
Board 28/8/1918 Central Hospital, Lichfield: suffering from syphilis - instructed to continue treatment.Cashiered following General Court Martial 22/10/1918
Charge Sheet 1:
1) behaving in a scandalous manner unbecoming the character of an Officer and Gentleman in that he,
at Grantham, on 21/12/1917, gave Florence Gertrude Cockersoll, Blue Ram Hotel, Grantham
a cheque for £4 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.2)Alternative charge: Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, in that at Grantham, on 21/12/1917, gave Florence Gertrude Cockersoll, Blue Ram Hotel, Grantham
a cheque for £4 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.3) Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, in that at Grantham, between 14/1/1918 and 31/1/1918 in exchange for cash, gave Gertrude Eleanor Foster, 4 Westgate, Grantham, a cheque for £2 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.
4) Behaving in a scandalous manner unbecoming the character of an Officer and Gentleman in that he, at Grantham, on 5/2/1918, gave to E Porter, 33 High St, Grantham,a cheque for £2 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.
5) Alternative charge: Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, in that at Grantham, between 14/1/1918 and 31/1/1918 in exchange for cash, gave E Porter, 33 High St, Grantham, a cheque for £2 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.
6) Behaving in a scandalous manner unbecoming the character of an Officer and Gentleman in that he, at Weston-super-Marte on 17/7/1918, in exchange for cash, gave Ernest Goddard, 36 High St, Weston, a cheque for £5 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.
7) Alternative charge:
Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, in that at Weston-super-Mare on 17/7/1918, in exchange for cash, gave Ernest Goddard, 36 High St, Weston, a cheque for £5 on Holt & Co, well knowing that he had not sufficient funds in the hands of the said agents to meet the said cheque and having no reasonable grounds for supposing that the aforementioned cheque would be honoured when presented.Second Charge Sheet:
1) Absenting himself without leave in that he, at Clipstone, on 30/4/1918 failed to report himself to the Officers' Classes, Training Group, MGC Training Centre as it was his duty to do and remained absent without leave until 2/5/1918.
2) Absenting himself without leave in that he, at Lichfield, on 2/7/1918 failed to report himself to the Central Hospital as it was his duty to do and remained absent without leave until 24/8/1918.
Findings: Court find the accused guilty of charges 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7, but not guilty of 1 and 4.
On the second charge sheet, guilty of all charges.Sentence: to be cashiered. Submitted to HM the King 4/10/1918.
