Title
Letter from Lady Catherine Ashburnham to Rupert Gunnis
Date
16 Nov 1944
Description

Has read through the Burley books. Things have not been kept 'here', although the family had a genius for collecting and there is still a good deal left after so many sales. Has found from the cash books, etc, that the Westm[inster] house seems to have fallen down twice, which may be the reason why the family moved to St James' s Square. It would be interesting to find where it was, and whether the famous staircase was moved elsewhere, if it was pulled down. RG's gift of andirons caused the fire to smoke badly until they were removed. Lady Loch thinks that the tall chairs are Victorian and were used by children at table.
