Original diary and typed transcript. Diary kept in a City of Birmingham Education Committee note book and marked, Bertram H. Broadbent, 152 New John Street, West, Hockley, Birmingham. Contains brief entries of promotions, leave and daily events.

Administrative / biographical background

Bertram H. Broadbent was living in Hockley, Birmingham in 1915 when he enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was trained as a scout/observer/sniper and served on the honour guard welcoming King George V and the American General John 'Black Jack' Pershing to Liverpool. Due to his age he was not deployed to France until 1917 where he served at Givenchy, Ypres and Cambrai. He was discharged on 10 May 1919.
