Administrative / biographical background

William Howard Smith, butcher, was based at 10 Market Street, Lewes, at the time that the account book listed below was compiled, but also occupied premises at 39 St Anne's Crescent, Lewes, by 1915. The same business was carried on by Howard Smith from at least the 1930s.

Entries in Kelly's directories state that the business was established in 1817. Pigot's directory lists a William Smith, butcher, at 10 Market Street in 1828-1829. It also contains an entry for William Smith, butcher, of 39 High Street, Lewes, who may have been the same person. The latter occupied the premises in the High Street from at least 1794 (Universal British Directory).
