John Mendelson was born (as Jakob Mendelson) of Jewish parents at Plock, Poland in 1917. He came to England in 1939, after a spell in the refugee camp at Zbaszun, and completed his education at the London School of Economics. He worked for a time as an extra-mural lecturer for Cambridge University prior to his call-up in 1943. After initial service in the Pioneer Corps, he transferred to the Royal Army Education Corps in which he was commissioned in 1947. Most of his post-war service was at the College of the Rhine Army, Gottingen.
In 1949 he was appointed as a staff tutor in the Department of Extra-mural Studies, Sheffield University, a post he held until June 1959 when he won the Penistone By-election for Labour. He held the seat until his sudden death in 1978. John Mendelson was on the left wing of the Labour Party and was an active member of the Tribune Group. He was a member of the Labour Party delegation to the Council of Europe 1973-77 and to the Western European Union 1973-76
