Ts account (147 pp), written in 1981, describing his training and service as Ordinary Seaman to Petty Officer in the Royal Navy from November 1936 to 1950. Smith served in the following ships/training establishments: HMS Ganges and HMS Ramillies (November 1936-December 1937; pp6-25, training ships/establishments); the cruiser Ajax (the America and West Indies station), quelling riots in Jamaica, visiting the Falkland Islands, assisting relief after the Chilean earthquake of 1939, and at the Battle of the River Plate (pp 25-69, January 1938-April 1940); with the Pakefield Shore Battery, southern England (pp 70-72, May-June 1940); in the destroyer Legion, in the Western Approaches, Force H and on Malta Convoys, in a raid on the Lofoten Islands, rescuing survivors from HMS Ark Royal, sinking 2 Italian cruisers (14 December 1941) and the Legion's own loss pp 74-105 (November 1940-March 1942); in the destroyer Rockwood in the Dodecanese and in a neutral Turkish port (pp 119-130) Mid 1942-December 1943) in the battleship Malaya (December 1943-May 1945), in Provost Marshal's Office, London (1945) and in the cruiser Superb (pp 137-141).
