Description

The bulk of the letters in this volume are from Lord Weymouth's agents or bailiffs at Drayton, Tamworth, Kempsford and elsewhere, especially William Hopkins, John Coelinge, George Crowther, Samuel Peers, Thomas Hawkes and other writers.

1. G. Sacheverell, appealing to Sir T. Thynne's assistance "as High Steward of that" Corporation, "Sir I have spent many hundred pounds in defence of ye rights and priviledges of this place and have contracted great Enemies, and I am not willing to bleed any more for so ingratefull a sort of people": New Hall, 5 May, 1680. f.5: (b) concerning Mr Ch[ancy] and the schoolmaster of the Corporation against whom no "charge could well be made out against .... without a Conjunc with ye Parson of ye Parish": 8 May 1680. f.11: (c) on the same subject: 31 May, 1680. f.30.

2. John Scott, Vicar of Kempsford, concerning the tithes: Kempsford, 24 June, 1680. f.46: (b) on the same subject and on enclosing Langdown: Kempsford, 9 Oct. 1680. f.79.

3. George Alsopp, on the illness of Mr Brooke, vicar of Kingsbury who is anxious that Mr Thomas Langley should succeed him: Tamworth, 18 Dec. 1680. f.115: (b) on Sir Thomas Thynne's standing "againe for the Burgesship of Tamworth": 31 Jan. 1680[1]. f.176: (c) sending him a copy of the present "Leavy for ye poore": Tamworth, 12 Feb. 1680[1]. f.194.

4. Sir Walter Bagot and Sir John Bowyer, that they have been chosen joint candidates as Knights of the Shire for Co Stafford: 12 Feb. 1680[1]. f.

5. Petition of John Turton to the H ouses of Parliament protesting against the improper election of Sir Thos. Thynne, as Burgess for Tamworth, though he, Turton, had been chosen by the "major parte of those who have the right of election in the said Borough": 24 Mar. 1680[1]. f.224.

6. John Gythens, Mayor of Gloucester, informing Sir Thomas that the Common Cohncil of that City decided to offer him the Freedom of the City "gratis:" they also present him with two Lamprey Pies: Gloucester, 6 Apr 1681.

7. J. Corbyn, on a proposed match between a member of his family and one of Sir T. Thynne's: Hall End, 20 May, 1681. f.283.

8. Thomas Clarges: (a) giving news of the Court, etc. "The toun is fill'd with the retirement of my Lady Ogle who withdrew last night with my Lady Temple for Northumberland House and it is not yet knowne whitner she is gone. The Deane of Canterbury sayd in my heareing that she was certainely married to Mr Thynns and on a re-arrangement of the Revenue of Ireland: 10 Nov. 1681. f.319: (b) with news of the Court, "Duells are now in as weekly a course as our Gazette" the heir of Sir Thos Styles killed, my Lord Gerard of Bromley ran through the body by Mr Darcy - with news from Holland, etc. 13 Dec. 1681. f.331: (c) with news of the City and the Court - the result of new election of Common Council - the conviction of the Earl of Argyll - a duel fought between Gilbert Gerard and Col. Web, etc. 22 Dec. 1681. f.337.

9. John Webb, Mayor of Gloucester, congratulating Lord Weymouth on his being created a Viscount and asking his acceptance of two Lamprey Pies: Gloucester, 31 Dec. 1682.
