Description (What the record is about)

The Stour Navigation Company was established by Act of Parliament in 1705 to make the river navigable from Sudbury to Manningtree. The Mayor and Aldermen of Sudbury were among the original undertakers. In 1892 the Company was turned into a limited company, the River Stour Navigation Company Limited, which went into voluntary liquidation in 1913. Some of the shareholders then formed themselves into a Trust Company which existed until 1937
